Has it been a while since you went through your Web site's user experience? If so, your website may be outdated and less user-friendly. Conversions may be lagging and bounce rates rising as a result. It's time to put your website under the microscope. We share 4 steps to get you started.

1. Keep the web design simple with plenty of white space

Websites with busy designs and lots of fuss, make it difficult for visitors to focus on your objective. For example, a conversion. Visitors have a low attention span, only eight seconds. If it is not clear within those eight seconds how to navigate and click, you lose them. Your bounce rate rises...

Therefore, make sure the design is simple. It should be immediately clear where one can convert.

White space is another element that makes your website appear calmer and clearer. Think of white space between paragraphs, but also white space between various layers.

Example whitespace

With more white spaces, visitors can scan your website faster.

Then emphasize the call-to-actions and visitors will immediately see what is expected of them in a calm design. This will increase the conversion rate on your website.

2. Make sure your website is (mobile) responsive

We live in a "mobile first" era. A website that is not responsive really can't be. Nearly half of all internet traffic and purchases come through a mobile device. And there is no end in sight for the time being. Make sure you have a good user experience and optimize your website for mobile.

3. Check the speed of your website

Like the low attention span, visitors also have little patience. Visitors don't want to wait. Does your Web site take longer than three seconds to load? Then visitors will drop out. Again, your bounce rate goes up, but conversions will also fail to materialize. After all, people drop out before they even land on the website.

Pagespeed website

Through tools like Google's PageSpeed Insights, you can very easily test the load time of your website yourself. Any causes are shared so you also know how to fix it.

Some causes are self-explanatory and can be prevented beforehand:

- Provide a minimum number of redirects to pages;

- Does not load heavy files in the websites, such as images and videos. You can compress these files beforehand;

- Avoid unnecessary features and plugins.

4. Apply micro-animations

In moderation, though ... but micro-animations can definitely enhance the user experience. It makes the website more lively and less static. But, as we said in point one, do keep the design simple without all kinds of fuss.

Micro-animations are visible yet unobtrusive movements in design. They show that something is changing and focus on the purpose of the micro-animation. For example, sign up or a download.
