The Democratic National Committee has even conducted tests showing that AI-generated content performed as well as or better than human-written copy in terms of engagement and donations.

Although the use of AI can have benefits, experts are concerned about the potential for disinformation. Recent examples demonstrate that AI can be used to create fake images that are difficult to distinguish from real ones. For instance, the campaign team of Ron DeSantis posted an attack ad on Twitter featuring an image of the Florida governor embracing and kissing former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci. However, this moment never occurred, and the images were entirely generated by AI.

AI is not only being used in large election campaigns but also in local races. In the Toronto mayoral race, a conservative candidate used AI-generated images in his campaign materials. While this has given him more visibility, it has also drawn criticism and mockery from opponents. This illustrates the potentially harmful side of AI in election campaigns, where the line between real and fake becomes blurred.

Experts emphasize the need to develop an approach to combat the spread of disinformation. It is essential to create methods for identifying and verifying fake images and false information. Additionally, attention must be paid to transparency and the ethical use of AI in campaigns. This is crucial for maintaining the credibility of elections and ensuring public trust.
