Amazon's new generative AI: a revolution in product reviews and e-commerce

Have you ever wasted time sifting through endless product reviews on Amazon? The company has introduced a solution: the implementation of generative AI to display product reviews more efficiently to customers. This technology picks up common themes and summarizes them on the product detail page, making it easier for customers to quickly find relevant information.

This new approach will significantly enhance the customer experience. Imagine you are specifically interested in the 'ease of use' of a product; now you can retrieve reviews that highlight this feature with just one tap. A substantial portion of American mobile shoppers already has access to this feature, which is expected to be rolled out further in the coming months.

Last year alone, 125 million customers contributed nearly 1.5 billion reviews to Amazon. "Our goal is to make this wealth of information even more accessible to our customers," said Vaughn Schermerhorn, director of community shopping at Amazon.

Despite the loud AI investments from giants like Microsoft and Google, Amazon's modest presence in this space indicates their understanding of the potential impact of generative AI on customer decisions. Marketers and businesses must now closely monitor how consumers respond to this new technological advancement.

Beyond reviews, Amazon's AI journey is extensive. Their AI platform, Bedrock, helps companies, for example, scale machine learning models. Furthermore, AWS invested $100 million in June in the Generative AI Innovation Center, aimed at connecting customers worldwide with AI experts.

Omnicom Group, a pioneer in advertising companies collaborating with this innovation center, is already utilizing AWS generative AI for various business operations. And this is just the tip of the iceberg: reportedly, Amazon is testing AI tools for sellers to generate product descriptions with minimal manual effort.

In conclusion, Nicole Greene, senior director analyst in the Marketing practice at Gartner, emphasized the importance of practical applications and direct consumer engagement: "Developing an internal model is one thing, but having it communicate directly with customers is a whole different challenge."
