Facebook is rolling out 'Link History' for all users and is using the data for targeted advertising.

Have you ever thought about the digital traces you leave while scrolling through Facebook? Facebook's latest update, the 'Link History', brings this question to the forefront. Recently, the company introduced this feature, which is enabled by default on both Android and iOS devices. With this, the platform archives users' link history, adding a new dimension to targeted advertising.

Availability

Facebook has recently rolled out the 'Link History' feature, which is currently only available on mobile devices and not on desktops. The rollout of this feature is gradual, so it may not yet be available in your region. Meta, Facebook's parent company, has not yet announced a clear timeline for the global rollout.

In a time when privacy laws are becoming stricter and the digital marketing industry is preparing for a future without cookies, this feature plays an important role. For marketers, it is essential to keep an eye on its availability, as it offers an opportunity to more precisely reach the ideal target audience. However, this solution may be short-lived.

How does this new feature work?

The 'Link History' feature, automatically active on both Android and iOS, saves the links you click on within the Facebook app. This feature tracks which websites you visit through Facebook's mobile browser, going back up to 30 days. Important to note: links visited via Messenger chats are not included here.

Turning your Link History on or off

A spokesperson for Facebook emphasized that users can enable or disable 'Link History' at any time. For those who wish to turn off this feature, Facebook provides a simple step-by-step guide within the app settings. To disable the feature, go to the browser settings in the Facebook app and deactivate the option 'Allow Link History'. After this action, Facebook will delete your Link History after possibly 90 days and will no longer use it to improve ads within the Meta network.

The 'Link History' feature of Facebook presents both opportunities and challenges. As a user, it is important to be aware of these developments and know how to protect your privacy. For more details, check the
