Google announces the discontinuation of rarely used search features

Google announces the elimination of rarely used search features

Google has announced that starting in January 2026, the company will be discontinuing several search features. The tech company aims to simplify and speed up search results for users.

Phasing out structured data and search functions

John Mueller, Search Advocate at Google, announced that the company is beginning to gradually phase out less-used features. "This update will simplify the page and improve the speed of search results," said Mueller. This is part of Google's ongoing efforts to make searches more efficient.

Google plans to remove various structured data types from Search Console and the associated API. Specific features that will be discontinued include practice problems, Dataset structured data, the "Today's Doodle" box, nutritional information, nearby offers, local bikeshare station status, and a TV season selector. However, this is not a complete list of all changes. The company emphasizes that this does not mean the end of all structured data and rich results. Google has even reactivated certain book actions because they are still being utilized by search features.

Consequences for businesses and websites

Website owners and SEO specialists need to prepare for potential changes in their organic search performance. The removal of certain structured data types may affect click-through rates from Google Search. Websites utilizing the deprecated markup types will need to adjust their code. Companies that rely on specific rich results for their visibility in search results may need to revise their SEO strategy. The impact is expected to be limited, as Google is only removing features that are rarely used.

Preparing for the changes

Webmasters are advised to review their current structured data implementation and remove unnecessary code before the changes take effect in January 2026. It is wise to regularly monitor Search Console for any warnings about outdated markup types. By taking proactive measures, companies can prevent potential negative impacts on their search visibility.
