Google Displays Ads in AI Mode: What This Means for Advertisers and Search Behavior

You no longer simply search for "best coffee machine." You now type something like: "Which coffee machine is suitable for a small office without a fixed power supply?" For such detailed queries, Google previously launched AI Mode. And now, advertisements are being added to that. So when you search, you not only receive an AI answer but also commercial suggestions.

Google announced this during Google Marketing Live. With this, the company takes the next step in how advertisements are integrated into search results, especially for questions that require more context.

Advertisements now appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews on desktop.

AI Mode was launched in March and answers longer and more complex questions than AI Overviews. While AI Overviews already displayed ads on mobile, this is now being expanded to desktop. At the same time, Google is starting to test ads within AI Mode itself.
According to Dan Taylor, VP Global Ads at Google, searches in AI Mode are on average twice as long as standard searches. He believes this presents opportunities to show ads to users who are open to new solutions.

What does this mean for advertisers?

Advertisers are getting new spaces to be visible. Ads can appear both within and below AI Mode responses. Those using Google's automation products such as Performance Max, broad keywords, or the new AI Max program can automatically participate in these tests.
This calls for renewed attention to how ads respond to specific queries. For example, someone searching for "create a website for a small business with a limited budget" will not only receive a step-by-step explanation from AI but also an ad for a website builder.

Global rollout on the way

AI Overviews will be available in over 200 countries and more than 40 languages. The advertising tests will begin in the US and will later be rolled out globally. This expansion follows recent updates, including Gemini 2.5 integration and shopping features in AI Mode.

Google is changing how and where ads appear. AI Mode is becoming not only smarter but also more commercial. It is important for advertisers to understand how these AI features influence search behavior. And how ads can add value in that new context without being intrusive.
