On Wednesday, Google announced a new feature within its AI assistant Gemini, called Guided Learning. This tool functions as a personal AI tutor that helps students develop a deep understanding, rather than just providing direct answers.
Competition with OpenAI for the education market
The launch comes shortly after OpenAI's introduction of Study Mode for ChatGPT, also aimed at promoting critical thinking. Both tech giants are responding to growing concerns that AI chatbots undermine the learning process by providing only direct answers.
Guided Learning distinguishes itself by explaining problems step by step and tailoring explanations to individual needs. The feature utilizes images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes to actively engage students in the learning process. According to Maureen Heymans, Google's VP of Learning & Sustainability, the tool helps users understand the "why" and "how" behind concepts.
Additionally, Google has announced that Gemini will automatically integrate visual aids and YouTube videos into answers for complex topics. Users can now also generate flashcards and study guides based on quiz results or lesson materials.
Business Impact and Market Strategy
For educational institutions and training companies, this development signifies a potential shift in how AI is utilized for learning processes. Companies that offer corporate training can benefit from more advanced AI tools that assist employees in developing skills rather than merely searching for information.
Google is strengthening its position by offering students in the United States, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil a free one-year subscription to the AI Pro plan. This package includes extensive access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, and Deep Research features.
