Google has expanded Performance Max campaigns with support for vertical 9:16 image ads. This mobile format helps businesses better connect with platforms where users spend a lot of time.
Story Image Ads in Performance Max
The "Story Image Ads" are now available in Performance Max. This vertical format was introduced earlier this year in Demand Gen campaigns and primarily appears in YouTube Shorts Image placements.
The technical specifications are clearly defined. The minimum dimensions are 600×1067 pixels, with a recommended size of 1080×1920 pixels. Files may be a maximum of 5MB in size. Google has not yet provided official confirmation regarding all placement locations, but experiences with Demand Gen indicate YouTube Shorts as the primary destination.
Business Impact of Mobile Design
This development offers companies new opportunities to reach their target audience in mobile environments. Phil Byrne from Positive Sparks Marketing emphasizes that it goes beyond just creative specifications. It is about reaching users in places where they naturally consume content.
YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok dominate consumer mobile engagement. Vertical formats fit seamlessly into these environments and hold attention better than traditional horizontal ads. For marketing teams, this means that campaigns can more effectively respond to the behavior patterns of mobile users.
Performance Max is already utilizing "GMC Image Shorts," which showcase multiple product images for remarketing and personalization. This move demonstrates that Google is increasingly focusing on short, shoppable media experiences.
Practical application for advertisers
Companies can directly implement this functionality in existing Performance Max campaigns. Vertical images work best when they are specifically designed for mobile display, with text and visual elements that remain clearly visible on smaller screens. Marketing teams need to adapt their creative assets to this new format. Existing horizontal campaign elements require redesigning to function optimally in vertical display.
