Meta introduces chatbots that proactively reach out.

Meta introduces chatbots that proactively reach out.

Meta is working on a new feature that allows AI chatbots to reach out to users unsolicited via Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. This development marks a significant shift in how artificial intelligence is utilized for user interaction.

AI chatbots take the initiative to make contact.

According to leaked documents from data processing company Alignerr, Meta is currently testing chatbots that can reach out to users without being prompted. These bots, available through Meta's AI Studio platform, remember information from previous conversations and can build on that.

One example shows how a chatbot named "The Maestro of Movie Magic" approaches users with messages about film music and movie recommendations. Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that they are testing this follow-up functionality. The chatbots can only initiate contact within 14 days of the initial conversation, and only if the user has sent at least five messages. If there is no response to the first follow-up message, the bots will stop sending messages.

Consequences for companies and organizations

This development offers companies new opportunities for customer interaction and marketing. Organizations can create personalized AI assistants that proactively engage with customers, which can enhance engagement and improve customer service.
At the same time, this comes with risks. Character.AI, a similar service, is currently facing a lawsuit related to the death of a 14-year-old boy in which a chatbot is said to have played a role. So far, Meta has not announced any age restrictions for the use of these chatbots.

Commercial objectives

Meta's business model primarily revolves around advertising revenue. The company predicts that its AI products will generate between 2 billion and 1.4 trillion dollars in revenue between 2025 and 2035. These chatbots could become an important part of that strategy.

Meta has not yet announced whether the chatbots will display ads or adopt a subscription model. The company stated that users can keep their bots private or share them via stories and profiles.
