Imagine being able to guide your child safely through the web of social media, with insight into their activities and interactions. Meta is now making this possible by launching new parental control tools for its suite of social apps: Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
This week, Meta introduced new parental control tools for its social media applications. These innovative tools enable parents to gain visibility into their teenager's use of Messenger, block unwanted private messages, and even send reminders to take a break from Facebook.
This development could impact businesses and organizations operating in the digital space. While respecting the privacy of messages, these tools have the potential to change the social media landscape, with parents becoming more involved in their children's digital lives.
These new features are designed to enhance and secure teenagers' interactions with social media. For instance, Instagram now requires that anyone wishing to send a message to a teenager must first send a request. This measure aims to reduce unwanted interactions.
Parents can also gain more insight into their teenager's friends on social media by seeing which accounts their teenager follows and who follows them. Soon, Facebook will display a notification if a teenager has spent 20 minutes on the platform, encouraging them to take time away from the app.
Meta emphasizes that these tools are being introduced with respect for teenagers' privacy and will be rolled out in both non-encrypted and end-to-end encrypted chats. The tools will be available through the Family Center, a central location where parents and guardians can find tools and resources to help them navigate their teenager's social media world. Currently, the initial rollout of these parental control tools will be available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
