OpenAI introduces Responses API: new tools for AI agents

OpenAI introduces Responses API: new tools for AI agents

AI agents are rapidly gaining ground, but companies are still struggling with practical application. OpenAI introduces the Responses API, enabling developers to build advanced AI agents. This technology assists with web search, file analysis, and automated workflows. With this step, OpenAI aims to transform AI agents from experimental tools into reliable, functional solutions.

What does the Responses API offer?

The Responses API replaces the Assistants API, which primarily supported chatbot-like interactions. With this new API, companies can build AI agents that independently search for information, browse company files, and perform computer tasks. This is made possible by the GPT-4o search and GPT-4o mini search models, which, according to OpenAI, are more accurate than previous versions and can cite sources for more reliable search results.

Additionally, OpenAI offers a file search utility, allowing companies to quickly search through internal documents without OpenAI using this data for training. The company also introduces the Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model, which can simulate mouse and keyboard actions to automate processes. This model can be executed locally within corporate environments, providing extra control over implementation.

Impact on businesses and organizations

Many companies are experimenting with AI agents but are encountering technical limitations. OpenAI is working to bridge this gap by providing AI tools that companies can practically implement. Particularly in the areas of search functionality and file management, the Responses API offers advantages such as faster data analysis and more efficient workflows. However, AI is not infallible: the models can still make mistakes and incorrectly cite sources.

Outlook: open-source toolkit and further development

In addition to the Responses API, OpenAI is introducing the Agents SDK, an open-source toolkit that enables companies to more easily integrate, test, and secure AI agents. An open-source toolkit means that developers have free access to the code, can modify it, and deploy it within their own systems. This offers flexibility and control over how AI agents are utilized. The Agents SDK builds on previous innovations, such as the Swarm framework, which allows AI agents to collaborate on more complex tasks.

OpenAI sees 2025 as a pivotal year for AI agents. Whether AI will truly emerge as a viable business solution remains to be seen. However, it is clear that OpenAI is transitioning from experimental demos to practical applications.
