You probably recognize it. You see a beautiful outfit or artwork on Pinterest and wonder: is this real? Pinterest is now addressing this doubt by actively labeling AI-generated content. At the same time, the platform makes it easier than ever to find exactly what you are looking for based on visual details.
New AI Tags for AI Content: Transparency in the Spotlight
Pinterest has officially rolled out AI tags to better inform users about the origin of images. When you open a Pin, a notification saying ‘AI modified’ now appears in the bottom left corner if the system determines that an image has been generated or altered using AI. This is done not only based on metadata but also through advanced detection tools.
Pinterest utilizes the IPTC standard for this purpose, which records edits and tools used in images. This method enables automatic recognition of AI content, even if creators do not indicate anything themselves.
There is room for correction. Pinterest acknowledges that AI detection is not infallible and therefore offers an appeals process for content that may have been incorrectly labeled.
Less AI content in your feed: Pinterest gives users control
Pinterest goes beyond just labels. Soon, users will be able to actively reduce AI-generated Pins in their feed. By clicking on the three dots on a Pin, the option 'See fewer' will appear. This feature is aimed at categories such as beauty and art, which are susceptible to AI manipulation.
In this way, Pinterest sends a signal to the algorithm: show less of this type of content.
Improved visual search features: faster and more precise searching
Pinterest is also enhancing the way users discover and shop. Through long-press and AI support, users can now isolate specific details from a Pin and continue searching based on that.
For instance, if you see a blue blazer, the revamped search bar helps you explore other styles or occasions. Prefer Y2K over classic? With the new filters, you can easily adjust your search results by style, color, or material.
What this means for brands and users
The introduction of AI labels helps to restore trust in the platform. Users gain more control over what they see. For companies, this means a higher barrier for opaque AI marketing, but also an opportunity for authentic content to stand out more effectively.
With the enhanced visual search features, brands can also respond to personalized search queries. Those who provide the right images now increase their chances of being found and chosen.
Pinterest is rolling out these features first for women's fashion in the US, Canada, and the UK. Other categories and countries will follow soon.
Want to remain relevant on Pinterest? Ensure that your content is clear and honest. Authenticity is becoming increasingly important on this platform.
