Have you ever wondered if artificial intelligence has political opinions? The answer can surprisingly vary depending on which AI model you consult. Just like humans, AI language models seem to have their own political preferences.
A recent study from the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University, and Xi’an Jiaotong University shows that different AI models vary in their political biases. While some models have a progressive stance, others lean towards a more conservative viewpoint. These findings are based on tests conducted on 14 large language models, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and GPT-4, as well as Meta's LLaMA.
This discovery has far-reaching implications, especially now that AI language models are being integrated into products and services used by millions of people. Unintended political assumptions and biases in these models can cause real harm. For instance, a chatbot providing medical advice might choose to avoid certain topics such as abortion or contraception.
However, despite criticism, OpenAI emphasizes that they strive for neutrality and are not biased in favor of any political group. Chan Park, a researcher involved in the study, believes that no language model can be completely free of political biases.
The researchers have attempted to determine how these AI language models acquire their political biases. They found that models like Google's BERT, which are trained on older books, have a more conservative slant than newer models like GPT that are trained on contemporary internet texts.
It is crucial for companies utilizing AI to understand how these biases can influence the behavior of their AI. Park emphasizes, "There is no fairness without awareness."
With the increasing integration of AI in today's world, it is essential to be aware of these biases and work towards creating more balanced and fair systems.
