Have you noticed the recent change on Facebook and Instagram? Users face an important choice. They must either consent to personalized ads or choose a paid version with no advertising. This development is causing considerable confusion.

Misunderstandings surrounding new announcement
When opening the apps, users are presented with a serious notice. They must give explicit permission to Meta to use their personal data for advertisements. The alternative is a subscription of 12.99 euros per month for mobile users or 9.99 euros through the website. There is a misconception that one has to choose between paying or canceling the account. Fortunately, this is not the case.

Response to European GDPR legislation.
This move follows Meta's conflict with European regulations. When GDPR legislation was introduced, Meta offered users only two options: delete their account or agree to personalized ads. The Irish regulator ruled that this violated the law.

By offering this subscription, Meta is trying to comply with European rules. Still, discussion remains. Users cannot choose to use the platforms for free without their data being used for advertising.

Data collection and advertising policy.
Meta's apps collect extensive user data for targeted ads. Despite privacy concerns, Meta prefers an ad-supported Internet. This model provides access to personalized products and services for all economic classes and supports small businesses.

European privacy authorities are taking a critical look at Meta's approach. They recently decided that Meta cannot show personalized ads without a legal basis. The debate is not over, but users can continue to use the apps for free if they wish.
