Google is more than just a search engine....

Search Engine Optimization. The best possible design of your website and pages. With the goal of ranking in the search engines. From optimizing content, improving the internal link structure, collecting backlinks to improving the user experience. Some of the "standard" SEO work that will have to lead to the ultimate result. Achieving and maintaining the first, non-sponsored, blue link on the first page of Google. And is this a good converting keyword or one with high monthly search volume? Count your winnings!

One would think.

Yet these days things are just a little different. Starting with 'the target group'. And then mainly the people who call themselves Gen Z. They search differently, not through Google. Too long, boring and dry SEO texts? Rather not! They prefer 'snackable content' on TikTok, Insta, Youtube or Pinterest. Google Search is often skipped completely. So does that first blue link under the sponsored posts you invested so much time, money and effort in.

Brainstorming session

Like every organization, Google has been around the table. How do we deal with a change in search behavior? The outcome: By changing from a search engine to a social platform. A platform on which you can scroll endlessly. And how will Google achieve that? By betting heavily on Youtube and Google Discover. The latter, with more than 800 million active users, is the 5th largest social platform in the world.

And there are opportunities there.

Google Discover responds perfectly to your behavior and interests. Google knows exactly which pages you like, how long you spend on a page and where your interests lie. Virtually every website uses Google Analytics. The foundation of the platform has been in place for years. And from that colossal mountain of data, they are now going to use it to provide you with relevant content.

But on Google Discover, you can't create an account and post content. So how does that work? Just, "simply," by posting content on your own website. Google is kind enough to go after its own content. That's what the Googlebot does every day anyway. So the key question is: How do I make sure my content gets picked up and displayed in Google Discover?

Optimizing images for local findability

Opinions are divided on that. At least not with endless SEO texts. In fact, Google has even said that it is not possible to optimize your content to show up in Google Discover. But what can you do?

Unknown person for Google

It starts with a kind of favoritism. Google prefers to display reliable and (h)recognized and well-known sources in Discover. How you become such a source is by posting a lot, often and regularly. Preferably on every platform. Your website, social channels, GMB, Youtube, you name it. And make sure you constantly profile yourself in the same way. And how do you know Google knows you? By looking up your company name within Google and clicking on the three dots. Does this only show indexing data? Then Google doesn't know who you are well enough yet.

So! In case you hadn't noticed: we are schurq. A rebel in the world of marketing and sales. With us, everything is about development. Of the team, the products, in the market or with the customer. Are you known to Google? Then it's a matter of continuing to post. Keep triggering your target audience with interesting and unique content. As mentioned earlier, you don't have to optimize your content. Yet we advise you to do so. After all, it is for the benefit of your organic findability. So make sure you have an optimized and user-friendly website, logical structure of your web pages and unique content. Do you meet these requirements? Then you might just find that your posts are picked up and displayed in Google Discover.
