Working from home, using yourself as effectively and efficiently as possible

It's so tempting ... you sit at home all day so those pajamas can just stay on, right?

No....

Don't get caught up in being at home. It will only make you feel more sluggish.

Tip #1. Follow your normal morning routine

If you have to go to the office, you probably have a morning routine. Don't skip this routine just because you're staying home. We recommend that you don't crawl right out of bed in pajamas behind your laptop.

Or worse.... You stay in bed and grab your laptop in bed on your lap. This temptation is great, especially if you don't have a proper desk in the house. Yet we advise against this. It keeps you in a bit of a sleep & bed mode. You feel a lot slower and more importantly, it's bad for your back!

Get up, just like you normally do when you go to the office. Get dressed and follow your morning routine. Of course, you don't have to dress in your office suit. You can also put on something comfortable or something you just feel active in.

Of course, you can occasionally work from the couch at home for an hour or so, but avoid prolonging it and being less productive.

Get dressed - working from home

Tip #2. Refresh yourself

Just as it is important to change your pajamas for clean clothes, refreshing yourself is also important. Think about washing your face or showering and brushing your teeth. This will make you feel fresh and ready to start your (work) day.

Tip #3. End your shower with a cold jet

Normally you might ride your bike to the office, bike to the train or bus or at least have to go outside to get in and out of your car. By working from home, you miss out on this fresh start in the morning. Do you shower in the morning? Then we recommend, besides the tip to keep your normal morning routine, to close your shower with cold water. A Dutch study shows that this leads to a higher energy level and lower absenteeism.

Tip #4. Don't skip your breakfast

When you work from home, you quickly put off your breakfast until later in the morning. If you were doing this anyway, there's nothing wrong. But if your breakfast normally falls within your morning routine, do so now. Wake up quietly and have breakfast before you start your work.

Tip #5. Create a pleasant home office

In the office, you have your own workspace. You can pull up right there in the morning. If you don't have an office at home, that's probably not the case right now. But a well-kept workplace has a lot of impact on your productivity. Take the time to create a pleasant workplace. During the set-up process, there are a number of points to pay attention to:

  • Jammers
Since many people work from home this period, chances are there will be others in your home as well. If you have the opportunity to work alone in a room, by all means do so. If this is not possible, put on good headphones with preferably music to help you concentrate. This way you will be less distracted by your partner or roommates.

  • A neat or a messy workplace
Research shows that a neat and a cluttered workspace both affect your productivity differently. A neat workspace helps you complete a complicated task and keeps you focused. A cluttered workspace will get you ideas. Now don't immediately fill up your whole desk or table, but hang some things on the walls around you, for example.

  • Plants in your workplace
Research shows that your productivity, ability to concentrate and satisfaction are increased by as much as 15% to 19% when you place a plant near your workplace.

Tip #6. Handle your office rhythm

Managing your office rhythm starts with your morning routine. But it also affects your eating habits. If you have a house full of tasty (unhealthy) snacks, it's tempting to grab them instead of a good lunch. But chips or anything else along those lines won't give your body enough energy. But you probably already knew that. Therefore, try to keep your normal office rhythm. Make time for lunch. It's basically a normal work day, only now you're working from home. If you don't have anything in the house for lunch, feel free to go to the supermarket as a break! Or take a nice walk outside during your lunch break.

Tip #7. Take regular short breaks

At the office, you unconsciously take little breaks in between. You get some coffee or chat briefly with your colleagues. At home, you quickly skip these. After all, you have no colleagues around you.

Research shows that the Dutch population takes too few breaks, compared to other countries in Europe. While another study shows that your productivity actually increases when you take more frequent short breaks. Try to leave your workplace for a few minutes so you can get back to work in full force.

Set your timer when you take breaks so it doesn't get out of hand ;). Some examples of short breaks:

  • 25 minutes of work and a short 5-minute break;
  • Half-hour break for lunch;
  • Take a 5-minute break every hour or take a 2-minute break every half hour.

Don't think that having multiple breaks makes your day less productive. In fact, as just mentioned, it's healthy to take a break in between. You can also think about a shower in between or a power nap. It even turns out that you are a lot more productive afterwards.

Tip #8. Don't close yourself off from the outside world

We may have to quarantine, but that doesn't mean you have to cut yourself off from the outside world. Keep in touch with your colleagues digitally or by phone. For example, via Skype, Google Hangout or Facetime. The same goes for your friends. You can also give them a call from time to time, so you are not completely alienated from the outside world ;)! After all, we don't know how long this is going to last.

#9. Kids in the house? Split up your workday

Working with your children around you can be a huge challenge. Therefore, try to divide up your workday. That way you can spend time with the kids in between. Play with them for a while and then tell them you have to get back to work. You can also work together. Give your children a coloring page and put them next to you. Or give your children their own "workspace" with toys. Pick out toys together in the morning and give an assignment for the day.

#10. Make appointments at home

You may not be the only one at home who needs to work from home. Therefore, it is important to make arrangements. You don't want to distract each other. Tell each other when you are in an important meeting, where you are working in the house, when you do not want to be disturbed and when there are breaks. Lunch can of course be taken together, that way you also stay in touch with each other a bit!

#11. Stop on time

At home, you are more likely to forget the time than in the office. There are no colleagues you see going home at 5 p.m. Set an alarm for the time you want to be done working so you don't overstay your welcome. After all, you need time for yourself, too. That way, you can start a new work-from-home day fresh and fruity tomorrow.
