Facebook has a new policy for the use of Facebook trademarks such as the logo and icons. If you, as an organization, do not follow the rules of this policy, it can lead to a refusal of your SSL certificate. Reason enough to read these rules carefully! In this blog we will tell you more about the new Facebook policy and the rules around the 'F' logo!

Facebook is trying to protect its trademark with the new policy. By consistently using the new policy, people are helped to recognize references to Facebook. Facebook is constantly on the lookout for improper use of its trademarks. If the trademarks are being used improperly, action will be taken. This can lead to a refusal of your SSL certificate.

Request for permission

If you want to use Facebook trademarks in subsequent marketing communications, you will need to request permission:

  • Advertisements or other marketing statements that appear online or on TV;
  • Books, plays, TV shows and movies;
  • Printed material;
  • News and live TV (when time permits).

Other marketing communications do not require a request. However, these expressions must comply with the guidelines described in the policy!

Use of the Facebook logo

Different rules apply to each logo or trademark. For example, you may only use the "F" logo to promote your presence on Facebook. This logo may never be altered, discolored or rotated. Is it not possible to place the logo in its original color due to technical aspects? Then you may place the logo in black and white. Also, there must be enough space around the logo so that the logo is clear and uncluttered.

Facebook Guidelines

There may be times when you refer to Facebook or want to mention Facebook in a text. There are specific guidelines for mentioning the word "Facebook" on your website. For example, you should always capitalize the word Facebook, except when it is part of a web address. In addition, the word should be written in the same style, font and size as the content surrounding it. Also, you should never use a Facebook logo in a place where the word "Facebook" should actually be.

There are some standard phrases approved by Facebook that you may use in your marketing statements:

The rules apply not only to Facebook, but also to Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. Want more information about the policy? Then click here >> or contact our specialists!
