We have reached a turning point: SSL will become even more important in 2017 and even necessary for some features on WordPress websites. WordPress wants more secure websites and is therefore going to require https for various features in the near future.

SSL basically means an encrypted connection between your browser and the server. Google is going to give visitors to sites and shops without HTTPS a security warning in 2017. To prevent this, it is important to have an SSL certificate.

SSL certificate

Previously, SSL was difficult to implement. It was expensive and slow. But modern browsers and successful projects like "Let's Encrypt" have been certified to quickly secure your website. Safer websites is the premise of WordPress, which is why SSL should become the standard for every website.

In fact, Google also weighs SSL heavily in its ranking factors. The search engine will also begin flagging unsecured sites in Chrome. Read more about this in our blog 'Google Chrome marks http websites as not secure'.

First of all, early this year, WordPress will start promoting only hosting providers that come with an SSL certificate. In the future, these rules will become even stricter. This will have to ensure that collaborations will only take place with companies that meet all security requirements.

Currently, there are still many websites that do not support SSL, or do not have valid certificates. In order not to lose users due to Google's deterrent notifications, it is important to have an SSL certificate as soon as possible.
